Balayage Hair Color

Who doesn't envy the natural sun-kissed highlights of their youth? You know, the ones you got from swimming and running around with your friends all day in the summer? The highlights that faded gradually and gracefully over the fall and winter. You can have that again with balayage from Johnny Rodriguez The Salon® in Dallas, TX, and Plano Legacy West.

What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a hair color technique that brings to mind days spent along the Cote d'Azur. It has the subtle effect of illuminating the face. One of our highly skilled colorists will evaluate your face shape before applying the color perfectly to flatter your features. Just as no two people look the same after spending time in the sun, balayage is a highly personalized technique.

We design each look specifically for your unique tastes and lifestyle. This technique is very much an art, using light and shade to create a multidimensional, multi-tonal look. It is a perfect technique for those with fine hair who want that lush, luxurious look of abundant tresses. You can think of balayage as hair contouring, creating the illusion of depth and movement that makes the hair look thicker.

How Is Balayage Applied?

Balayage is applied by painting the color on the surface of the hair strands, not completely saturating it. Like painting a picture, it is done freehand without the use of foils or materials. The result is a smooth stroke of color that doesn't completely cover the locks from roots to tips but instead floats in strategically chosen areas anywhere from mid-crown to tips. That's why it is essential to select an expert in balayage that genuinely understands how to bring out the best in each client.

When you come to Johnny Rodriquez the Salon®, whether you choose our elegant Dallas, TX location or our equally luxurious salon at Plano Legacy West, you can be assured that your colorist has the expertise you want for your treatments. They are highly experienced in their field and have undergone extensive training and continuous education. Each one stays on top of the latest products, tools, and techniques so that they can meet the needs of every client.

How Does Balayage Differ From Traditional Hair Color?

This technique has actually been around for many years, but only recently has it gained attention again. Balayage differs from traditional hair color in a few ways:

  • It is hand-painted.
  • It changes the surface of the hair, not the entire hair shaft.
  • It doesn't apply a uniform color to the entire head of hair.
  • It doesn't cover all existing color.
  • It doesn't require foils, caps, or other materials.
  • It is unique to each client.
  • It doesn't create a harsh contrast to the surrounding hair.
  • There are no obvious root lines as it grows out.

Balayage is a French word that means "to sweep." Your color artist literally sweeps or paints a color onto strands where the sun would naturally touch it. The highlights or lowlights can draw attention to or away from features, depending upon how and where they are applied. They are also an excellent way to gracefully transition hair color that is growing out without applying a whole new color.

How Long Can I Expect the Process To Take?

Remember that this is a bespoke process. Your colorist will need to evaluate your face and hair to determine the best placement. Once they get started, it depends upon how much color you are looking for. A few small highlights can be a quick process, taking as little as 45 minutes to apply. However, if you are looking for a complete multidimensional look, you might plan for up to three hours.

Does It Require a Lot of Maintenance?

Because there are no definite regrowth lines, balayage grows out more gracefully than most techniques. It is less expensive to maintain and is perfect for times when you can't get to a salon often, such as when traveling. This technique is perfect for times when your color needs a little refreshing, but you aren't ready to do a full recolor. If you want to make the effect last, ask for periodic babylights.

Is Balayage for Everyone?

Absolutely! Whether you have a pixie cut or long locks, this technique is for everyone. It fits every style and length. Because the color is selectively painted on, it results in a completely unique, natural look catered to you.

Does It Work on All Hair Colors and Textures, Including Gray?

Every hair color, whether natural or not, can benefit from balayage. It can lighten up dark hair and add depth and even selective highlights to lighter hair. Balayage works equally well on thick, thin, curly, wavy, or straight tresses. You can also apply balayage to gray hair as long as you understand that it will blend but not completely mask the gray.
