Massage is the art of using your hands to rub and knead different parts of the client's body to bring relaxation and healing. An appropriately trained massage therapist knows how to apply pressure to joints and muscles to reduce pain and stress. Many different types of massage exist to address a variety of client conditions.
Chair massage is one type of quick therapy that focuses on the neck, back, and shoulders. This type of massage is good for those who are new to a massage for several reasons.
Cupping, also called cupping therapy, is a type of ancient alternative medicine, dating back to Egypt, China, and the Middle East. The therapist puts specially designed cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. The cups may be made of silicone, bamboo, earthenware, or glass.
During a cupping session, the practitioner puts a flammable substance, such as alcohol or paper, in a cup and set it on fire. Once the flame burns out, the cup goes upside down on your skin for about 3 minutes. The air cools and creates a vacuum. The blood vessels expand, causing redness.
The cupping procedure may be performed wet or dry. In wet cupping, the therapist uses a small scalpel to make tiny cuts on the skin once the cup is removed. He or she removes a small amount of blood. Some practitioners have shifted to a more modern version of cupping that uses a rubber pump instead of fire to make the vacuum. Antibiotic cream and a bandage may be applied to prevent infection. It may take up to 10 days for your skin to return to normal.
Clients of cupping believe it helps with a variety of problems, such as pain and inflammation. It may also help with blood flow, relaxation, and overall well-being. Some cupping clients believe it may help remove toxins from the body, but this theory is unproven scientifically speaking.
